RECYCLING REVISITED : THE THREE Rs
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE:
Team Recycling is excited to announce the appointment of a new contractor to collect and transport recyclable waste in the Pennington area.
Mr Reggie Govender of Coastal Waste Services has been in the waste business for several years. He comes with a proven track record. As expected with a new service provider, there will be small changes in the modus operandi in order to meet the new requirements.
FOR PENNINGTON HOUSEHOLDERS:
The depot for the collection of waste will be re-located from Ironwood Walk to a specially prepared site (monkey-proof, lockable cages) on the corner of Pennington Drive and Avrille Road, opposite the Pennington Superette. The holding area will be open seven days a week, during the Pennington Superette’s trading hours. Replacement coloured bags will be issued by the assistants at the Superette.
FOR THE MAJOR PLAYERS (Umdoni Retirement Village & business enterprises i.e. shops, golf estates, etc.):
Mr Govender will continue to collect from each of the premises. Should the collection day be changed, you will be notified.
A THOUGHT FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW:
Before you throw anything into the rubbish bin, THINK first: Does it really need to fill up a landfill?
60% of household waste could be recycled; Only 12% currently is.

This symbol ndicates that an item can by recycled. However, not all recyclable products have this symbol.
DO’S AND DON’TS
The buzz word for this new chapter of our recycling project is:
clean, clean, clean.
Bottles, jars, plastic containers, plastic bags, tins and cans must be CLEAN.
Contaminants (plus maggots and mice!) are a major hazard in waste control.
DO’S:
Sort the recyclable garbage and place into the appropriate coloured bags.
• PURPLE: glass bottles and jars (remove caps and lids). Rinse containers first.
DID YOU KNOW: RECYCLING ONE GLASS BOTTLE SAVES ENOUGH ENERGY TO MAKE 5 CUPS OF TEA.
• ORANGE: all types of paper and cardboard but no used tissues or paper serviettes.
(Flatten the boxes and cartons).
• YELLOW: plastics e.g. marg tubs, cool drink and milk containers, detergent containers, plastic bags and clean wrap.
NOW, polystyrene (boxes and trays from takeaways and supermarkets) may also be thrown into the yellow bag.
Try to flatten the bigger bottles – stamp on them – good exercise!
• BLUE: tins and cans, tin foil, foil dishes. Rinse the containers.
If the bags are not broken or contaminated, Mr Govender will re-use them.
• E-WASTE: (electronic and electric waste)
A marked wheelie bin will be provided for toxic waste – light bulbs, batteries, computer cartridges, modems, cell phones etc.
DONT’S:
• Don’t mix recyclable items and put them in one bag.
• Tetra Pak cartons (lined with aluminium or plastic) e.g. milk, fruit juices cannot be recycled at our site.
• Hard plastics, e.g. CDs, CD cases are not recyclable.
• Don’t put any wet waste e.g. veggie peelings, leftover food into the coloured bags.
• Don’t throw broken glass into the purple bag.
Please use the marked wheelie bin at the depot for any broken glass.
• Don’t over fill the purple bag – half full is enough.
Glass is heavy and dangerous.
THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN THIS PROJECT AND HELPING TO PRESERVE OUR PLANET.
